In collaboration with the Queensland Writers Centre , Boonah Fassifern Writers launched Writing Fridays in the Boonah Library in 2023.
Our fortnightly Writing Fridays are focussed writing sessions, where writers follow the Pomodoro productivity technique. In 1985, researcher Francesco Cirillo discovered that working in bursts of 25 minutes, followed by a short break, optimised mental focus and productivity. The name ‘Pomodoro’ (Italian for tomato) originated from his use of a tomato-shaped kitchen timer.
There are myriad reasons why this process works so well for so many in our Writing Friday meetings. Some find the sense of solidarity, working on projects in a room with like-minded creatives, makes them more productive.
Others enjoy the ‘special time’ in the archives room, away from the world and focussed on their project.
Still others enjoy the camaraderie of meeting with other wordsmiths, asking advice and celebrating victories big and small, during our coffee break.
To others, it’s an active way to make a commitment to their writing time, when it’s all too easy to put off at home.
At Writing Fridays you’ll join with a varied collection of writers using their time to write, research, or edit their work. Some write poetry, others work on novels, memoirs, family histories, theatre plays and screenplays. Some writers use laptops, others write by hand. We extend a very warm welcome for you to join with us on Writing Fridays.
Our Writing Friday schedule looks like this:
Arrive 9am for a 9.15am start
9.15 – 9.40 Writing
9.40 – 9.45 Quick break to stretch, chat, and move about
9.45 – 10.10 Writing
10.10 – 10.15 Short break
10.15 – 10.40 Writing
10.40 – 11.20 Our long break where we enjoy a cuppa and snacks at a local café, while we catch up on all things writing, inspiring, and supportive
11.25 – 11.50 Writing
11.50 – 11.55 Short break
11.55 – 12.20 Writing
12.20pm
It’s around this time we check in to see who’d like to continue for a few more Pomodoros or whether we finish as a group.
We don’t keep to strict attendance, so you can come and go as you like, and fit Writing Fridays around appointments and other commitments. We’d love to meet you there and learn about your writing journey.
